Movie Review: She's The Man

I won tickets on an internet site for this, so I didn't have any preconceived expectations of the film. Besides being predictable, there are some cringe-worthy moments in the film. One of my favourite moments is to do with tampons - watch the film, you'll laugh yourself silly! If I hadn't won tickets, it would probably be something that I would eventually get around to watching on video or when it came on tv.

Plot: In this update of Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night, Viola Hastings had her own good reasons for disguising herself as her twin brother, Sebastian and enrolling in his place at his new boarding school, Illyria Prep. She was counting on Sebastian being AWOL from school as he tried to break into the music scene in London. What she didn’t count on was falling in love with her hot roommate, Duke, who in turn only has eyes for the beautiful Olivia. Making matters worse, Olivia is starting to fall for Sebastian, who – for reasons Olivia couldn’t begin to guess – appears to be the sensitive type of guy she’d always dreamed of meeting. If things weren’t complicated enough, the real Sebastian has come back from London two days earlier than expected and arrives on campus having no clue that he’s been replaced – by his own twin sister.

Return To Work

I went back to work yesterday after being off since Good Friday.

I was reading through my work emails and came across a reminder that I was to have my flu vaccination at 8.30 yesterday morning. There was a mjor problem with that... I didn't start work until 9.45! So I headed downstairs to get my needle.

By the end of the day, the area around where he jabbed me, was a bit red and sore. It was very uncomfortable trying to sleep because I tend to sleep on that side as well. *wince*

The good thing though, is that nearly everybody else who has had the vaccination has the same big red spot on their arms too!

Movie Review: March Of The Penguins & Eight Below

I actually dragged my mum to see March Of The Penguins on Friday while we were waiting for my car to be serviced and I could pick it up. I have been a little slack as it was supposed to be serviced in February. Finding the time to do it has been hard because I have been doing so much overtime at work!

It is definitely a "sanitised" version of some of the nature documentaries National Geographic are noted for. You can't help but look at these amazing creatures in a new light and realise that they are pretty intelligent - not to mention cute! A definite must see!!

On Monday, I went to see Eight Below. Another "sanitised" film as it was "inspired" by a true story. It has been given the Disney treatment, making it a kids movie - I read somewhere that of the 8 dogs, only 2 survived.

Plot: Jerry Shepard (Paul Walker) is the guide at a research base in Antarctica where his best friend is knockabout cartographer, Charlie Cooper (Jason Biggs). There is also an unspoken “thing” between Jerry and the team’s pilot, Katie (Moon Bloodgood) – which means that neither of them has done anything about their feelings for each other. Jerry, who believes his job precludes having a real girlfriend, nevertheless has eight “kids” – six huskies and two malamutes – who are as close to him as any human family.

The latest passenger that Katie flies into the base is Davis McLaren (Bruce Greenwood), a scientist who is searching for meteorite fragments from Mercury. With winter about to descend, the supposed location of these is dangerously distant, but a reluctant Jerry is ordered to take McLaren to the spot. The mission is a partial success - McLaren finds his meteorite - but on the way back, he breaks his leg in a life threatening accident and is saved by Jerry and the dogs – one in particular who risks her own life to help him. What’s more, a severe storm is approaching and when the team returns to the base, everyone is ordered to fly out. But there is no room on the plane for the dogs. Katie assures Jerry that she will come straight back for the dogs who are chained together before the plane takes off – but the deteriorating weather conditions put an end to that plan.

Determined to return to find his beloved dogs or at least to know their fate, Jerry tries to mount a rescue mission without much success, but he perseveres. Back in the endless icy whiteness, the dogs – most of whom have now freed themselves – try to survive. Each segment of their ordeal is preceded by a title that tells us how many “Days On Their Own” they have endured, and as the days multiply, these become more distressing. Their journey is not without its tragedy or its hazards – including a frightening confrontation with a monstrous and very angry sea lion – but how they work together as a team is remarkable.

Movie Review: Ice Age 2

While I'm on holidays I decided to treat myself to the movies. So far I have seen Ice Age 2. Unfortunately I chose to go when all the parents who wanted to shut the kids up for an hour, and fill them with popcorn and sugar laden "post mix" drinks, decided to go. Apart from that, it was a decent movie.

I was a bit weirded out by the change in the character Diego's eye colour from the first movie to this. In the first movie I'm pretty sure he has blue or green eyes, but in this one they are brown. A movie mistake perhaps?

I still like the first one better, but for $8.50 I'm not complaining.

Plot: The Ice Age is coming to an end, and the animals are delighting in their new world: a melting paradise of water parks, geysers and tar pits. But when Manny, Sid and Diego discover that the miles of melted ice will flood their valley, they must warn everyone and somehow figure out a way to escape the coming deluge.

It's A Single's Life For Me

I have friends who are married with kids; friends who are married without kids; friends in a relationship (be it hetero or gay); and friends who are single but have kids, but none that are close who are just single.

It's never bothered me before, but somehow, it has crept up on me without me being aware of it. It's almost like it's taunting me to my face saying 'nyah, nyah, nyah, nyah, nyah!' It is seriously depressing!

You begin to question if there is something wrong with you that your family and friends are not telling you about. Or if it's just your nose hair that you've forgotten to trim! *snort!*

I have thought about joining an internet dating site and I have in the past gone in and had a snoop at some of the profiles (both mens & womens - to get an idea of what one puts in these things), but I'm not sure that it's my thing.

Also, I have several friends who have used these sites and most of them have not had much success. I know of only 1 person who has had a successful relationship and that is 'Viv'.

Maybe I should try the picking up in the supermarket, but knowing my luck they will already be taken or gay! :(

Bon Voyage

After work today I headed down to the Moon & Sixpence for a farewell lunch for Vivian.

She has decided to move back to the States to be closer to her family, especially her new granddaughter Autumn - she also has another granddaughter on the way.

It was officially her last day of work last Friday, but as she wasn't sure exactly when she would be flying out, we decided to have a last meal together.

Bye Viv! Y'all better keep in touch & come visit when you're back in Oz!

Busy Week

Phew! It's been a busy week!

I've been doing overtime for the last month or so, 10+ hours a day, Monday to Friday and it is really starting to wear me down. I was lucky enough to have Wednesday off this week because I had to work today.

I didn't even get to sleep in on my day off because I managed to wangle an appointment with my hairdresser who lectured me. I haven't been since July last year and my hair was really starting to look the worse for wear.

It's looking a lot healthier - I haven't been this colour, nor this short for a long time. I'm loving it!!

Movie Review: Cry Wolf

I dragged a friend to lunch at the Old Bailey today. We had a couple of drinks with lunch before heading off to the movie. A few plot twists keep you thinking throughout the movie. It's pretty easy to guess the ending but I mainly watched it for Jared Padalecki (Sam from Supernatural) - what a spunk!

Plot: After one too many incidents of bad behaviour at his last school, Owen Matthews arrives at Westlake Prep – where a young woman has recently been found murdered in the dark woods near the boarding school’s campus. Owen quickly falls in with the school’s unofficial “Liars’ Club”, including the beautiful and savvy Dodger and quick-talking, short-tempered Tom. At Owen’s suggestion, his new friends decide to expand their game’s reach beyond campus, by spreading an online rumour that a serial killer called “The Wolf” committed the recent murder and is planning to strike again. The mischievous group’s descriptions of “The Wolf’s” intended victims are based on the people they know best – each other. Only when the school’s journalism teacher, Rich Walker, warns the group about the kinds of predators that lurk on the Internet does Owen begin to regret sending their falsified story into cyberspace.

When the described “victims” suddenly start to disappear, Owen, Dodger and Tom are no longer able to determine where the lies end and the truth begins. As someone – or something – starts hunting the players themselves, the game turns terrifyingly real.
