Going by the explanation found at http://www.phys.uu.nl/~strous/AA/en/index.html you would need to be down a very, very deep well so as to reduce the brightness of the sky in comparison to the brightness of the stars.

I'm sure there is a more thorough explanation out there but I'm yet to find it.
